ODU’s Ron Whitcomb Passing Camp welcomes Heinicke home

Friday morning's Ron Whitcomb quarterback/wide receiver passing camp was the fourth installment for the Old Dominion assistant coach, but on this occasion campers were treated by a visit from former record-setting Monarchs quarterback Taylor Heinicke, now battling for a spot on the Minnesota Vikings roster.

"Having Taylor Heinicke here was super cool. Basically, a kid that has done all that fundamentals that I teach at this camp and has used it to propel himself into the National Football League," Whitcomb said of Heinecke, as his former pupil stood off to the side posing for pictures with campers.

Whitcomb will begin his ninth season with the ODU program, his second as offensive coordinator adding to his role as quarterbacks coach.  From the beginning of camp, it was apparent the amount of passion that Whitcomb has for the game of football.

A sentiment his former pupil later echoed following the day's three-hour camp. "It felt good to come back from Minnesota. I forgot how much energy Ron Whitcomb coaches with. It's fun and I definitely remember the memories," Heinicke added.

Under the tutelage of Whitcomb, Heinicke was selected to all-conference teams in his last three years as a Monarch. Heinicke's finest season came in 2012, when he set the FCS single-season record in passing yards and completions.
